Jonathan Smith spent 15 years making floating barriers that prevent water-borne terrorist attacks using improvised explosive devices (IED) at WhisprWave, a company he ran with his father in New Jersey. Although they scaled that company to $15 million in revenue, Smith eventually yearned to try a different type of business. “I got tired of flying back and forth to the Middle East,” he says. He craved a simpler business with less “lumpy” revenue.
